Need help for my husband with Chrones

by Cheryl
(Iowa )

Husband diagnosed with Chrone about 12 years ago. No major flare up in 10 years. (Thank goodness) This past April 08 started feeling just awful. Finally decided it was time to visit Dr. He had tests and colonoscopy which the Dr. stated severe Chrone's and was suprised he hadn't been in much sooner. In Sept. he began Humria. First month and half he was feeling great. Since November he is having severe intestinal pain, very constipated and night sweats are present. Dr. put him on Nexium a few weeks ago. The pressure was releived some, but he is not eating at all due to such cramping with in hour of eating. He needs nurtion. Looking for any advise.

Need help for husband NEW
by: Annette Young

Hello there,

I am sorry to hear that your husband is feeling so poorly. If his medications are not working, then he really must go back to the doctor. He should also tell them that he is constipated because if this is becoming a regular thing, there may be a narrowing of the bowel walls which means that there could be an obstruction.

It's not my intention to alarm you but it is better to be safe than sorry.

The large intestine has to re-absorb water from the food following digestion, if there is too much re-absorbed, the stools can become harder to pass.
The main factors that lead toward constipation are:
Poor diet- not surprising for crohn's sufferers as pain after eating can mean that the person does not eat a well-balanced diet.
Insufficient fluids can also play a part so I would double-check your husband's diet and his intake of water per day.
If he is suffering badly, he will probably get insufficient exercise but some basic yoga exercises can work on the whole body and start things moving, plus, they take very little energy.

If he has poor posture, which many of us have, this can also add pressure to the bowel and can delay the need to empty the bowels.

So there are other reasons for constipation but as I said previously, it is better to be safe than sorry.

I hope that your husband gets some more help and that he starts to feel better soon.

Best wishes,

Annette

Re; Skin Rash w/ Humeria

Shawna,

He has been on Humeria since Sept. and I have not seen any skin rash. I did see that as a side effect somewhere today in my scouring for information, but I can not currently recall which med that was side effect to. Sorry.

Has he had any rashes or skin reactions to Humira?

Hi Cheryl. I have had CD since i was twelve and I am now fifty.
Foods are really trial and error. There are some foods that really cause me major distress such as red meats and some vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower. But there are some foods such as fish(flounder, bass, telapia etc...) and fowl (chicken mostly) that i can tolerate with no trouble whatsoever. Maybe you just havent found the right foods as of yet. there are also mild supplements that are very easily tolerated and will give him all the nutrition that he needs. the best of these is ENSURE(vanilla preferably).
Now, about your medication. I was on Remicade for two years and it was the best two years I have ever had with CD. No flare ups, no pain!
My doctor convinced me to enter a study switching to Humira. Within one month all the pain and cramping etc. came rolling back and then some. i switched back to Remicade and now I feel great once again.
Everyone is different. Find out if maybe Remicade would be right for your husband.
Good Luck and if you need to chat more my email is tod@mynewbenz.com
