prednisone or a recurrence

My son has been taking prednisone for 4 months. We are tapering and he is alternating 5mg every other day. Today was the first day he did not have to take the prednisone and he just vomited and had diarrhea. How do you know if this is a recurrence of Crohn's or a due to the taper?
